My gal pal, Beth Bender, Makeup Artist extraordinaire and creator of bethbenderbeauty will sit back and watch proudly Sunday night as GCB [Good Christian Belles] debuts on ABC.  Back in early November, I was with Beth, as we were doing a power blogging session together when she got the call from the set of GCB requesting a set of glosses for veteran actress Annie Potts.  Annie loves bethbenderbeauty and can be seen sporting Beth’s lipglosses and eyeliner kits.

Beth quickly headed over to the set and hand-delivered Get In Line Eyeliner Kits and her signature LipShine for all the beauties of GCB.

Oscar Hits on the Red Carpet

1 Mar

Share

By now you’ve all had plenty of time to view the multitude of media press given to the best dressed and worst dressed of the Oscars.  As a proud member of the Glam Squad [that's what they call makeup artists and stylists in the Industry], I too was glued to my TV last Sunday night, and had my favorites.

With a couple of commercials that had me up the next morning at the crack of dawn, I saved you all from having to shuffle through another’s rant about Angelina Jolie’s uncomfortable leg trick.

However, after receiving a couple emails asking “what color lipstick did Natalie Portman have on” to “how did they get Tina Fey’s skin so flawless” I decided that I did catch a running theme with a few of the Oscar Divas, so I thought I would share it with all of you.  These picks all scored a rocking 5 on my Buzz-o-meter!

Flawless Skin.  Period.  It seemed to be the running theme with the ones that were big hits with me.  No smokey eyes, or bold lips, but flawless skin and subtle eye makeups.  It was a big hit on the red carpet, so why not consider it for your next big night out.

Natalie Portman just wowed me with her makeup!  Simply stunning!  Not overdone, just flawlessly chic.  Her makeup was all Dior.  Classic yet subtly defined eyes with black liner and black mascara.  Barely there pink cheeks and rose lips.  Her hair was down, but with a classic old Hollywood sweep to one side.  Her look just oozed elegance.  Motherhood is definitely agreeing with this lovely lady.

Tina Fey was another on my favorites list!   Gorgeous peaches and cream skin, with just a hint of cheeks to give an illusion of blushing from within.  She skipped the heavy eyes, and went with a soft look to define them instead.  A double dose of mascara made her brown eyes stand out and a soft neutral lip just pulled her look together.  Her dress was absolutely stunning, and her up “do” just just completed her amazing look.  Tina was rocking the red carpet, and proved you don’t have to be a young Hollywood starlet in your 20′s to work it!

Jennifer Lopez always rides the edge.  Sometimes funky with her style, sometimes classic, but one thing is for sure, her makeup is rarely a miss.  With her makeup by Mary Phillips, JLo didn’t disappoint me.  Subtle winged black liner on top, with neutral eyes, a smidge of a drop shadow on the bottom and a set of lashes to make them pop.  Just a hint of bronzer gave her a sun-kissed natural look, and as always LOVED her lips!  No one wears the nude lip all glossed up like she does.  You can pair it with subtle eyes, or with deep smokey eyes, and it’s always alluring.

They eyes have it for Penelope Cruz! Was she stunning or what?  The color of her gown against her skintone was such a big hit, not to mention it was absolutely gorgeous.  Eyes were a little more defined than my other picks, but the theme again was neutral.  Lancome Black Lapis liner rimmed the top and bottom while neutral shadows added a touch of definition.  A set of lashes brought it all together.  Her hair just screamed Glamour, with a pinned back “do” that echoed old-fashioned pin curls.

There you have it ladies….my top picks for the ladies who really got it right where their hair and makeup were concerned.  Remember, the next time you head out for a red carpet event, or you’re just playing dress up for a friends party, less can often be more!  No need to rim your eyes with jet black liner and fill in every crevice with a smokey gray shadow, sometimes, just a hint of definition placed ever so perfectly will grab all the attention you can handle!

And the Oscar Goes To…..

24 Feb

Share

It’s going to be a sunny weekend here in Southern California- and everything is coming up gold!  The countdown to the Oscars has begun.  Who are your favorites, and will they be ready for the red carpet?

It’s also a big weekend for Stylists, Makeup Artists, Hairstylists and Manicurists as everyone gears up for Hollywood’s big night.  Who will wear what, and who will have a big hit or a disastrous miss on the red carpet?  We’ll be standing by ready to see.

This is like my Super Bowl.  Since I was a little girl, I’ve been glued to the tv Oscar night.  Maybe I always knew that I would end up in Hollywood, behind the scenes making up faces.  Creating magic, or at least what most of you think is magic.  To most of us makeup artists, it’s simply color theory and an illusion we’ve learned to create with the help of light and shadow.  But to many, we can make or break their look.

So here are a few tips to get you Red Carpet Ready for your close-up:

  • LESS is more!  Go easy for big events.  There is nothing worse than overdone foundation that is ready to crack.
  • Leave the Bronzer on the Beach!  An overdone bronzer can go south too quickly with formal attire.  So, opt for a simple chiseled look instead.  Accentuate your high cheekbones with a beautiful peach shimmer instead of trying to create a Bahama mama look.
  • Don’t overdo the Powder!  A matte look is not necessary on the red carpet, and a dewy look screams, healthy skin.  So if you must, dust powder once to set your makeup, but don’t keep packing it on throughout the night.
  • WATERPROOF those eyes!  If you’re a nominee and the waterworks may begin if your name is called, for heaven’s sake make it waterproof!  Choose gel liners over pencils, they last longer and tend to seal the deal for hours on end.  Make sure to curl those lashes and double dip them in a waterproof mascara for extra lush-ness.  Three individual false lashes at the outer corner of each eye will really make them pop, so consider adding those to up the ante on your eyes.
  • Don’t be afraid of color on your lips!  If you’re a neutral girl, who sticks to neutral shades of sheer gloss, consider making a statement or pulling your look together with the perfect lipcolor.  A bold red if you’re wearing black will echo Old Hollywood, or a deep rose wine if you’re wearing silver will channel Glamour.  A little trick-  prime your lips with your favorite Eye Primer- this will give you a clean slate so the color is true, and it will lock in for hours of wear.

Who will I be rooting for on Oscar Sunday you ask- ok, you didn’t ask, but I’ll share my favorites anyway……

  • Octavia Spencer- Best Supporting Actress for her role in the HELP- my favorite movie of the year
  • Viola Davis- Best Actress for her role in the HELP- read above
  • George Clooney- for his role in the Descendants, and just because he is so yummy
  • Matthew Mungle and the Makeup/Hair crew for their incredible transformation on Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs
  • Best Picture- The Artist- When Hollywood was at its best.
Now, make me proud girls, create a style all your own and own your look- and I’ll see you on the Red Carpet!

Octavia Spencer Does Lunch With Oscar

6 Feb

Share

My big Oscar pick this year is Octavia Spencer!  The Help was one of my favorite movies, and my girl didn’t disappoint me.  The annual Oscar luncheon for nominees was held Monday in Los Angeles.  The annual luncheon presents a relaxed atmosphere for nominees in all categories to get together and celebrate their craft while honoring each others accomplishment with no stress over who will take home the gold statuette.

Octavia shined in this beautiful wrap dress.  It compliments her size 14+ figure, and shows her curves, yet hides what it needs to.  Her hair was soft and flowing with loose curls, while her makeup was simple and classic.  Defined eyes, yet not overdone, and sheer glossy lips screamed sexy.

She used her handbag and nail polish as accessories and polished off the perfect classy daytime look.   Take note ladies you don’t have to fit into a size 2 to look fabulous!  Dress your body and wear your outfit, don’t let it wear you and you’ll own your look and exude confidence.

Emma Stone Reveals Her Beauty Secrets

20 Jan

Share

Grapeseed Oil is the secret weapon in actress Emma Stone’s makeup bag.  The 23-year-old actress recently told a reporter that her skin is ultra sensitive and allergic to everything.  She keeps a bottle of grapeseed oil on hand and splashes it on right out of the shower.  ”It’s the perfect moisturizer for my sensitive skin” she adds.

This freckled face beauty had a super busy year with big movies hitting the screen, Crazy Stupid Love and the Golden Globe nominated The Help.

Grapeseed oil is very rich in antioxidants.  Since much of the damage to our skin comes from free radicals, using an oil that’s high in antioxidants and absorbs quickly into the skin is a plus for fighting aging.   The antioxidants present in grape seed oil are called proanthocyanidins, and are reportedly 50 times stronger than the antioxidant power of Vitamin E.  It does not exacerbate acne, but will improve skin tone and texture because of its slightly astringent properties.

Just a couple drops massaged into skin prior to your favorite moisturizer will help open up the pores and will double the duty of your favorite product.  Used as a moisturizer for oily skin, it will keep flakes at bay without adding to production of natural skin oils.

TIP:

  • Massage into skin PRIOR to applying sunscreen in the Summer as its antioxidants power will help boost your protection to sun damage.

A Plus Size Hit at The Golden Globes

16 Jan

Share

If you are an “average” American woman, then you are not a size 2, 4, 6  or even an 8!  You are most likely a 12 or larger.  A quick glimpse of any magazine or even the red carpet at one of the most popular yearly awards shows wouldn’t suggest it, but it’s true.

So when it comes to dressing our larger than ‘skin and bones’ silhouette’s remember to choose wisely ladies- especially for a bigger than life event.

Octavia Spencer did just that!  A gorgeous pale lilac gown was her choice for the 2012 Golden Globes and boy did she wear it with style.  She owned her look and was simply stunning.  Beautiful defined eyes with a touch of color as well.  Light lilac mixed with a deeper plum and lots of mascara.  Just a hint of gloss to finish her look was the perfect  touch.  Her hair was done in a classic French twist that gave her that polished look.

Octavia dressed her curves in style and really worked that red carpet.

Melissa McCarthy on the other hand did not do her size or figure justice in my opinion.  I think this dress was the perfect example of a dress that wore the woman rather than the woman wearing the dress.    The style wasn’t very flattering, and the color wasn’t moving me either.

And although her makeup didn’t bother me, it didn’t ‘wow’ me either.  But her hair really was a miss!  It was a bit over-powering and just didn’t frame her face well.  She should have chosen a much softer look.  Perhaps leaving her hair down with lots of curls, or if she was set on putting it up, a softer look with a sweep of bangs to one side with soft falling tendrils might have been more appealing.  Her look was a bit too severe and just didn’t hit it out of the ballpark, as a matter of fact, it didn’t even make it past the infield.

No matter what your size girls, own your look!  As style Guru Tim Gunn says   “Forget your Flaws and Dress Your Positives”.  Choose your makeup and hairstyle to compliment and finish your look with a bang!  As as always….

Turning Heads at The Golden Globes

15 Jan

Share

It was a gloomy day in LA, but not inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel where  Michelle Williams not only took home a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe, but she took home the prize for “stunning”!  She dazzled the red carpet, looking gorgeous as ever.

The Oscars had nothing on these ladies.  Typically the Golden Globes are a little more dressed down than the Oscars.  The evening includes dinner, and while the stars dine as they mingle before the awards, it has a more relaxed atmosphere than that of the formal Oscars.

But when a girl is invited to a party, she always accepts the opportunity to dazzle in style.  Chignon’s and sleek hairstyles were the big hit of the night.  My favorites by Debra Messing, Kate Beckinsale and Kate Winslet.  Old Hollywood would have been proud of these ladies, as they looked sleek and stylish.

But the biggest hit of the night I believe went to the actresses over 35.  They all looked amazing.  Soft and blended makeup, simple and elegant hairstyles and gorgeous dresses.

Here were my favorites:

Debra Messing rocked those deep smoky eyes.  She gave a new definition to the “little black dress”.  Picture perfect gown, gorgeous makeup and the perfect jewelry to bring it all together.

Kate’s hair and makeup were stunning!  Light and neutral eyes and neutral lips didn’t overpower her gown, but accented her look.

Jodie Fosters hair and makeup was polished and completely complimented her chiseled features.  Sophisticated, and understated.  Simply elegant!

Julianne’s peaches and cream skin was the perfect canvas for her deep smoky eyes.  I loved that she didn’t try to overdo the look with strong lips, but went with neutral lips and just a hint of cheeks to finish off her look.  Absolutely stunning.

Viola Davis shined in this gorgeous burgundy gown.  Her makeup was beautiful.  Defined eyes with luscious lashes, and beautiful glossy lips just finished her look with style.

My favorite look of the evening went to Kate Beckinsale.  Her champagne gown with elegant beading was classic Hollywood.  A beautiful pulled back “do” was the extra added touch, and allowed her gorgeous drop earrings to finish her look.  Simple makeup didn’t compete with her classic look, but added to its elegance.  A 5-star winner in my book.

Now girls, don’t be too fooled by the beauty of these glam girls.  They all had a ‘team’ of stylists getting them ready.  That included a Hairstylist, a Makeup Artist and a Stylist who not only shopped for their gown, but most likely was there to make sure that it was hit before she walked out the door.  Yes, we too could look that spectacular if we had a ‘team’ getting us ready every day.  Until then, use the hits to inspire you and the misses to remind you that even Hollywood Divas get it wrong every now and then.

Stay Gorgeous Girls…

“Worth Fighting For” a Book About Life After Loss

4 Jan

Share

Lisa Niemi Swayze, lost her late husband actor Patrick Swayze to Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer in September 2009.  In her new book “Worth Fighting For”, she opens her heart about the battle he went through, their 33 year marriage and how she coped with the loss of her best friend.

Worth Fighting For by Lisa Niemi Swayze

Written from a Caregivers perspective, she reminds everyone going through the battle with a loved one that although the true pain is for the one suffering from the illness to bear, the caregiver fights their own battle.  “There is so much fear surrounding Cancer” she says, “but don’t shut down- if you can go through it together, staying  open to each other, it makes the journey less painful.”  She encourages caregivers and said if she could speak to them she would say “take care of yourself- remember you need to take a little time for yourself too”.

I have always thought Lisa was such a beautiful woman with a beautiful spirit.  She not only endured the pain of watching her husband slip away, but had to watch it through the eyes of the tabloids as well.  Yet she did it with such grace and style.

She continues to honor his memory by being a spokeswoman for the Pancreatic Cancer Action NetworkThe Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The organization is leading the way to increase the survival rate for people diagnosed with this devastating disease through a bold initiative–The Vision of Progress: Double the Pancreatic Cancer Survival Rate by 2020.

I salute Lisa for her efforts to bring awareness to this horrific disease that takes life too quickly from us.  Her beauty shines in the work she is doing, and the voice she longs to bring caregivers everywhere.  You can pick up a copy of her book “Worth Fighting For” and enjoy the hope it brings and the message of Love, Loss and Moving Forward.

The Dedication says it all- “To the one I love- Gone from my sight, but close to my heart”.

Stay Gorgeous Girls-
