2012 Fashion Trends

Out with the old, in with the new as the saying goes.  A new year brings with it a renewed sense of being.  A clean slate, and another chance to change  the things we aren’t quite loving in our lives.

This is a great time to clean out your closets and makeup cabinets ladies, as colors, styles and trends change quicker than the blowing wind.  What made you ‘fashionable’ last year will have you looking ‘out of style’ this year.

So listen up- Fashion Guru Isaac Mizrahi stopped by the set of ABC’s Good Morning America to share his thoughts for what will take you to Chic in 2012.

Top 2012 Fashion Trends:

  • Bright and Bold Colors.  Leave the pastels and the blacks of yesterday, and turn to COLOR.  2012 is all about color, and lots of it.  Mix it, match it and wear it!  And it’s all about color blocking, so ditch the temptation for the same color skirt and blouse and mix it up with 2 bold colors that compliment each other.

  • Low Heals.  Ditch the heals ladies, flats scream STYLE this year.  You’ll no longer feel frumpy grabbing a pair of comfy flats, so embrace them while you can.  Isaac says you can wear them with a beautiful skirt and jacket combo, or pair them with a pair of jeans for a fun, casual look.

  • Dropped Waistline.  Embrace tops and dresses that have a dropped waistline.  He says this elongates and adds height to a shortened torso, and may hide a few flaws.  But, beware, if you’re one with a couple rolls around the middle, he warns that this is NOT the look for you.  It can accentuate those rolls, so make sure to embrace this style IF your waistline can handle it.

And if fashion is what you’re all about, then mark your calendars for Thursday, January 5th when Lifetime will debut yet another show in the Project Runway Series- Project Runway All-Stars makes its debut.

Isaac joins Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, supermodel Angela Lindvall and Marie Claire editor-in-chief Joanna Coles for Project Runway: All Stars. Isaac and Georgina will judge the reality series, with the help of weekly guest judges, while Angela will host and Joanna will work as a mentor with contestants. The cast is comprised of past Project Runway contestants, all looking for a shot at $200,000 worth of cash and prizes.

So mark your calendars as you know the Designer Divas will bring with them lots of drama!

Hair Style Alert: How To Get The Perfect Blowout

2 Jan

Share

If you’re obsessed with the new show “Revenge,” we hear ya!  The scenery of the Hamptons, the fashion and just the all around gorgeousness has sucked us in.  And the hair…how we wish our hair looked that perfect!  So, the BSW beauty dept. went out on a search to hunt down the staff member responsible for the “fabulous hair”.

Introducing…Roma Goddard, one of the show’s on-set hairstylists, shared some of her tricks behind Ashley’s perfect blowout.  Here’s what she had to say:

First she clips in hair extensions to add length and body.  Then she dampens Ashley’s bangs with natural mineral water, which adds moisture and shine.  She blows them dry with a medium-sized round boar bristle brush by putting the brush under the bang and blowing the air from the hair dryer directly down.  Then she separates Ashley’s bangs, creating a middle part, and blow drys them with the dryer to each side creating a more swept feeling which she calls “Brigitte Bardot bangs”.   Then she uses a 1/2″ mini flat iron to train the bangs in the perfect direction.

Then  Roma uses a medium-sized Marcel curling iron to candlestick-curl her hair.  Using a hair clip, she then sections the hair horizontally around her head and then takes 1/2-inch sections and wraps them around the barrel of the iron, away from the face. When Roma is done she finishes Ashley’s look with hairspray to tame flyaways.

Sounds simple enough…HA!

Let us know if you try Roma’s trick for getting “the perfect blow out.”

Turn a Daytime “Do” Into a Nightime “Do”

13 Dec

Nothing turns heads quicker than a sexy hairdo for a fancy occasion. But with the busy schedules most Divas are working these days, going from daytime corporate wonder woman to nighttime red carpet Glam girl can be a bit challenging.  Here are a few easy ways to make your girl Friday “do” turn heads on the red carpet.

BASIC PONYTAIL: The basic ponytail is such a versatile do.  You can where it to the ball-field, the gym, the office and even on the red carpet.  Different variations will make it transition quite easily.

  • Try a mid ponytail with a side part sleeked back for a great corporate daytime look.  Transition to night by pulling out a section on the side with the most hair [from the ear forward].  Add a nice flip with a large barrel curling iron to add a sexy sweep.  Pair it with a beautiful drop earring and your “Do” made the quick change in less than 5 minutes.

BASIC CHIGNON: One of my favorite looks!  This can be a sleek daytime look but can become a sexy “messy do” in just a few quick minutes.

  • Start with a low chignon for daytime.  Avoid using too much product to sleek it back [this will make it easier to take out sections later].
  • For a quick change to night time, pull out small strands on both sides of your face.  Curl loosely and allow them to fall to the sides creating cascading curls around your face.  Don’t worry if the bun has become a little messy….you can even pull out small strands, curl with a large barrel curling iron, then twist and pin around the bun to create soft curls.

A SLEEK BUN OR FRENCH TWIST: A beautiful slicked back “do” in either a bun or french twist can be completely transformed by the addition of accessories.

  • A gorgeous Broach can become the highlight of your “Do” instantly.  Slide a bobby pin where you want the broach to be, then slide the pin of the broach through the bobby pin.  Adorn a French twist by choosing a long broach that can sit into the fold of the twist.  This is a great way to add a little “bling” to your “do”.  Add a pair of lovely long drop earrings and you’ve dressed up a daytime “do” that is sure to turn heads.

Whatever hairstyle you choose for your night-time gala work that Red Carpet like you own it!

Get Diana Agron’s Smoky Eyes in Copper for the Holidays

6 Dec

Share

Holiday makeup doesn’t always have to match the tinsel. At the Trevor Project’s Annual Benefit in Hollywood, Dianna Agron turned heads with her sleek pompadour and rust-colored eyeshadow.

We loved the departure from the traditional gilded hue, and how the unique shade made her green eyes pop.

If you don’t have a rust colored eye shadow in your beauty arsenal you can sweep a warm brown shadow over your lids to create a similar look, and be sure to blend out any harsh lines. Apply mascara, but use a minimal amount of eyeliner so you don’t take away from the shadow’s effect. The result is effortless and unexpected—not overdone.

Lash Extensions- To Lash or Not?

30 Nov

Share

Lash Extensions are all the rage in Hollywood these days, but are they really worth it?

Well if you’re Oprah and your bank account has an unlimited amount of expendable funds, then you might want to experiment with them.  What are they?  Basically individual lashes that are glued onto your own lashes adding volume and length.  You choose how full or how natural you want them to be.  The average cost- $300 for the first application and $75-$100 every 3-4 weeks for maintenance.

Last Extensions BEFORE

Lash Extensions -After

The application is pain-less.  You lie down for 60 minutes and basically take a nap while someone glues these babies on.

The PRO-  longer, fuller lashes that need no curling, no mascara and no attention- well, at least not for a couple weeks.

The CON- they WILL fall out eventually.  So you must have them “touched up” every 2-3 weeks at about $75-$95 a session.   That adds up to approximately $1500 a year for beautiful lashes.

So you ask, to lash or not to lash?  My vote is NOT.  The women I’ve spoken to say that it took nearly a year for their real lashes to recover from the wear and tear.  The glue that is used is a heavy-duty glue.  Much stronger than the glue we use with conventional lashes.  So if your budget is going to run out, and you are eventually going to have to remove the lashes, or just let them fall out naturally [which they will], know that the real lashes left beneath might not be up to par with those you remembered.  The ‘ol conventional false lashes we’ve been using for years work just fine for a special occasion.

So beware if someone tells you that the newest Lash Extension Fad is all the rage and WON’T ruin your real lashes.

Taylor Swift Shines at the CMA’s

9 Nov

Share

Looking absolutely stunning Taylor Swift took to the Red Carpet at the 2011 Country Music Awards waving to fans and looking as giddy as a school-girl.  I think one of the most refreshing things about Taylor is her love for what she does and her innocence.

She seems almost un-affected by her success, and oozes down home country girl next door.  And her looks don’t hurt.  The young singer is blessed with beauty that shines from the inside out.

Her look is flawless. Peaches and cream skin that glows. A mix of blue and bronze just sets her eyes on fire.  Gorgeous neutral bronze brown tones defined her eyes, as soft blue lined the lower lid.  A set of lashes gave her that wide-eyed look, while a luscious sheer raspberry gloss framed her face.

Taylor could give a lesson or two to Hollywood starlets as she always looks polished and classy. Her pulled back wave curl “Do” was Old Hollywood.  Sleek and chic, while showing off her gorgeous drop earrings.

Topping the charts at only 21 years old, Taylor took home the biggest prize of the night, Entertainer of the Year.  You Go Girl!

Glamour’s Woman of The Year Awards

9 Nov

Share

New York City’s Carnegie Hall was full of girl power as Glamour Magazine held their annual Woman of the Year awards honoring…WOMEN!  And many of them.

Taking home top honor was Jennifer Lopez.  She was honored as the 2011 Woman of the Year and received her award from designer Donatella Versace, who created the dress Lopez was wearing.

Jennifer’s makeup was stunning, as always.  Flawless skin with a dewy look kept it real.  Her eyes sparkled with hues of gray and a smudged smokey look gave her eyes depth.  A set of added lashes brought the attention to her eyes.  In typical J-Lo style, she chose a nude neutral lip with a dose of gloss to finish it off.

Her hair was simple.  Pinned back on both sides cascading down.  Simple, understated and elegant.

Emma Stone made her entrance in a yellow Lanvin gown.  She was chosen to present the 21 Years, 21 Young Women award to twenty-one extraordinary ladies who dedicated their lives to making a difference in the world.

As always Emma ROCKED the red carpet.  I just LOVE this young lady, and her look.  Gorgeous bronze hues worked right up to her brow-bone just light up her eyes.  A beautiful coral bronze lip finishes her look without conflicting with her stunning red tresses.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match lip colors lady.  Very few Makeup Artists use 1 color right out of tube.  Grab a coral and mix it with a beautiful bronze, or add a touch of bronze to a deep mauve.  The colors you can create are endless.  Top them off with a little gloss and you’re ready to go.

Stay Gorgeous Girls!

Holidays and Red Lips Make A Perfect Pair

29 Oct

Share

Nothing makes lips more luscious around the holidays than a pout lined in RED!  Red lips speak elegance, old Hollywood, classic Marilyn Monroe look.  But nothing ruins a beautiful red lip more than chapped dry lips,  uneven lip-liner, bleeding lipstick or the wrong red for your skin-tone.

Time to get your lips in shape so they are ready for the holidays, and RED!  Here are a few simple steps for getting your pout pucker perfect!

Blake Lively sparkles in Red

Step 1:

EXFOLIATE & MOISTURIZE- Nothing ruins a red lip more than dry flaky skin and cracked lips.  At least twice a week [more if you have really chapped lips] use a spoonful of sugar on a toothbrush dipped in a drop of olive oil- then scrub into lips.  The sugar will help exfoliate the dry skin and the olive oil will lock in a little moisture.  Follow with a dose of your favorite lip balm before bedtime.  My favorite- Smith’s Rosebud Salve.

Step 2:

CHOOSE A NUDE LINER- Nothing looks worse than an uneven lined red lip.  So ditch the matching liner, and go for a nude one instead.  This will allow you to get a nice even line without competing with your lip-color.

Taylor Swift puckers up with a red pout

Step 3:

CHOOSE COVERGIRL OUTLAST WHEN WEARNG REDS.  This is my ‘go to’ line of lipstick for reds.  Nothing looks worse than a red lip that is bleeding beyond the lip line, or one that has smudged and smeared after drinking a cocktail at your favorite party.  The Covergirl Outlast allows you to create a nice sharp line and will dry in less than a minute, and it will stay put for HOURS!

Janet Jackson dazzles with Red Lips

Step 4:

CHOOSING THE RIGHT RED.  Your skin-tone will play a big role here.  Ladies with darker skin-tones will have a full color palette to play with.  Reds look beautiful on darker skin tones, so don’t fear them, embrace them.  If you’re very fair, consider a red gloss instead.  It will give you a softer look without feeling like your lips arrived 2 blocks ahead of you to the party.  If your smile isn’t the whitest and brightest choose a red with a blue undertone, this will make your teeth appear whiter.

Whatever your mood girls, try a Red lip as your date to the party!  Have Fun!

Stay Gorgeous Girls!

Sandra Bullock Turns Heads at the LA AmFar Gala

28 Oct

Share

Sandra Bullock oozed ”chic” at the Los Angeles Amfar Inspiration Gala, Thursday October 28th.

Stepping out for the evening with her agent and honorary AmFar Chair Kevin Huvane.  Sandra worked the red carpet with her smile.

Once inside for the event, she presented a moving tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor.

Her gold sparkling dress wasn’t the only thing that sparkled.  Her eyes lit up as usual in neutral shimmering  taupe’s lined with black to make them pop.   A double dose of mascara gave her luscious looking lashes, and a nude pink gloss finished her look.

Sandra’s hair was pulled back in a tossled messy pony with a side sweep.  Chic and elegant without over-doing it.  Another great example of how you can take a daytime pony and make it work for an evening event.  Add a nice sweep of bangs and drop earrings to accentuate it and you have a daytime look that will move right onto the red carpet.

Exclusive Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes of Lifetime’s Project Accessory

26 Oct

Share

This just in- an exclusive sneak peek at Project Accessory.  Get your popcorn ready girls, as the biggest Competition Series since Project Runway debuted will premiere on Lifetime this week, and I have the INSIDE scoop from the Glam Sqaud themselves!

That’s right, Ms Buzz is tight with the Makeup Department, and I have the insider info on what, where and how they used their tools.   I just so happened to sit side by side the Key Makeup Artist, Rosanne Puchal almost [says it low under her breath so you can't hear me___ years ago] in Hollywood, CA in Joe Blasco’s Makeup Academy.  Proud to say we’ve been ‘besties’ ever since!  She’s the Thelma to my Louise, or the Lucy to my Ethel.

Donyale McRae is the Department head and Makeup Designer for the show.  Donyale is one of New York City’s most sought after makeup artists.  Having  worked his magic on the likes of Tina Turner, Anita Baker, Gladys Knight and many more.  His work can be seen on the Covers of every major magazine, both in the US and Europe.  He was the Department Head for 6 seasons of Project Runway, most recently Rocco’s Dinner Party and is the mastermind Makeup Designer behind the newest series to hit Lifetime, Project Accessory.

Donyale met Ro many years ago, and they have been teaming up ever since.  The Duo has been responsible for the look of many recent shows; Project Runway, Roccos’ Dinner Party, The Big Gay Sketch Show, Sherri, and now Project Accessory.

The makeup was sponsored by MAC, so of course most of the products they used were MAC, but every now and then I’m sure a few other favorites of theirs snuck in.  That’s just the way most of us Makeup Artists fly- we have favorite ”go to” products that we just HAVE to have in our kit.  Donyale says to be on the lookout for MAC’s new line of mascaras- ‘False Lashes’ Extreme Black. You’ll see them used throughout the season. The New Viva Glam lipsticks also make their debut, see if you can spot the new colors.

Donyale promises you will LOVE the look of the show.  Fabulous designers who are very talented and could make “something out of nothing.”  A “rather exciting” display of their talents.  He was quite proud of the work his Makeup and Hair departments did,  ”they provided a beautiful backdrop for the Accessories.”  Key Hairstylist James Crawford was just “fabulous”, working with products from John Frieda, the official Hair products Sponsor.  ”He is a very talented hairdresser to the stars, and he raised the bar on this one” , “a true delight to work with”, commented both Donyale and Rosanne.

Despite the ‘not so ideal’ working conditions; difficult location and minor mishaps with product delivery, as always, they pulled a MacGyver and made it all look effortless.  It must be something we all learn in makeup school, to roll with the tide because the best makeups seem to evolve when ’perfect’ settings aren’t the norm.

Every artist has their favorite products that I like to refer to as “security blankets”.  As an artist, you just feel better knowing they are in your kit.  I asked both Ro and Donyale what their ”security blanket” products were:

  • Donyale says “Concealer- GOOD concealer”.  “Don’t  waste your money on drugstore and dept. store concealers-buy a good theatrical  concealer that you can work into anything you need it to be.  If necessary you can water it down a bit to make it move, but a really good concealer is a must have for every girl!”
  • Ro says she loves “MAC blushes”, “they make beautiful colors and have staying power”, “a beautiful blush will add just the right amount of color to make your look pop!”

Look for their work to beautify the the runway of Project Accessory.  Debuting Thursday, October 27th 10:30 pm et/pt. on Lifetime.  Check your local listings.

Stay Gorgeous Girls!
