Braids Are Back

Funny how so many trends come and go over the years.  But if you hold on to something or some technique long enough, rest assured it WILL be back!

Braids had their big days back in the 80′s- remember Princess Leia.  She was sporting various styles of braids in Star Wars.  Braided buns, one long back braid, one side braid etc.  Then the ever so popular French Braid had its explosion in the 90′s.  Loose, tight, one, two, side to side, front to back etc.  You name it they found a way to do it.  Then there were variations of the French braid and so on.

The 2000′s hit and out with the 90′s went the French braids.  You rarely saw a braid unless it was a single braid, and rarely on anyone over 10.  But girls….like all things, you knew they’d be back.  And they are!

Celebrities and models alike are sporting the simple french braid that falls into the rest of their hair at Awards shows and on the runway.  The classic diagonal french braid is another big hit on the runway.

Start your braid at the front of your hairline on either side.  Continue the braiding creating a diagonal as you go so that the braid ends up over the opposite shoulder.  Looser is better for this look.  Remember the tightness of your braid depends on your age as well.   Tighter french braids look good on little girls, and the looser braid adds a soft and sexiness to a woman.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match the braiding with a classic bun or pulled back look.  Jessica Alba looks stunning in this classic french braid that works into her “up-do”.  Better enjoy the braiding while its back girls.  ’Cause we all know, that just as quick as things come back into style, they head right back out!

So sport a french braid the next time you want to try something fun and different.

Oscar Hits on the Red Carpet

1 Mar

Share

By now you’ve all had plenty of time to view the multitude of media press given to the best dressed and worst dressed of the Oscars.  As a proud member of the Glam Squad [that's what they call makeup artists and stylists in the Industry], I too was glued to my TV last Sunday night, and had my favorites.

With a couple of commercials that had me up the next morning at the crack of dawn, I saved you all from having to shuffle through another’s rant about Angelina Jolie’s uncomfortable leg trick.

However, after receiving a couple emails asking “what color lipstick did Natalie Portman have on” to “how did they get Tina Fey’s skin so flawless” I decided that I did catch a running theme with a few of the Oscar Divas, so I thought I would share it with all of you.  These picks all scored a rocking 5 on my Buzz-o-meter!

Flawless Skin.  Period.  It seemed to be the running theme with the ones that were big hits with me.  No smokey eyes, or bold lips, but flawless skin and subtle eye makeups.  It was a big hit on the red carpet, so why not consider it for your next big night out.

Natalie Portman just wowed me with her makeup!  Simply stunning!  Not overdone, just flawlessly chic.  Her makeup was all Dior.  Classic yet subtly defined eyes with black liner and black mascara.  Barely there pink cheeks and rose lips.  Her hair was down, but with a classic old Hollywood sweep to one side.  Her look just oozed elegance.  Motherhood is definitely agreeing with this lovely lady.

Tina Fey was another on my favorites list!   Gorgeous peaches and cream skin, with just a hint of cheeks to give an illusion of blushing from within.  She skipped the heavy eyes, and went with a soft look to define them instead.  A double dose of mascara made her brown eyes stand out and a soft neutral lip just pulled her look together.  Her dress was absolutely stunning, and her up “do” just just completed her amazing look.  Tina was rocking the red carpet, and proved you don’t have to be a young Hollywood starlet in your 20′s to work it!

Jennifer Lopez always rides the edge.  Sometimes funky with her style, sometimes classic, but one thing is for sure, her makeup is rarely a miss.  With her makeup by Mary Phillips, JLo didn’t disappoint me.  Subtle winged black liner on top, with neutral eyes, a smidge of a drop shadow on the bottom and a set of lashes to make them pop.  Just a hint of bronzer gave her a sun-kissed natural look, and as always LOVED her lips!  No one wears the nude lip all glossed up like she does.  You can pair it with subtle eyes, or with deep smokey eyes, and it’s always alluring.

They eyes have it for Penelope Cruz! Was she stunning or what?  The color of her gown against her skintone was such a big hit, not to mention it was absolutely gorgeous.  Eyes were a little more defined than my other picks, but the theme again was neutral.  Lancome Black Lapis liner rimmed the top and bottom while neutral shadows added a touch of definition.  A set of lashes brought it all together.  Her hair just screamed Glamour, with a pinned back “do” that echoed old-fashioned pin curls.

There you have it ladies….my top picks for the ladies who really got it right where their hair and makeup were concerned.  Remember, the next time you head out for a red carpet event, or you’re just playing dress up for a friends party, less can often be more!  No need to rim your eyes with jet black liner and fill in every crevice with a smokey gray shadow, sometimes, just a hint of definition placed ever so perfectly will grab all the attention you can handle!

Hair Style Alert: How To Get The Perfect Blowout

2 Jan

Share

If you’re obsessed with the new show “Revenge,” we hear ya!  The scenery of the Hamptons, the fashion and just the all around gorgeousness has sucked us in.  And the hair…how we wish our hair looked that perfect!  So, the BSW beauty dept. went out on a search to hunt down the staff member responsible for the “fabulous hair”.

Introducing…Roma Goddard, one of the show’s on-set hairstylists, shared some of her tricks behind Ashley’s perfect blowout.  Here’s what she had to say:

First she clips in hair extensions to add length and body.  Then she dampens Ashley’s bangs with natural mineral water, which adds moisture and shine.  She blows them dry with a medium-sized round boar bristle brush by putting the brush under the bang and blowing the air from the hair dryer directly down.  Then she separates Ashley’s bangs, creating a middle part, and blow drys them with the dryer to each side creating a more swept feeling which she calls “Brigitte Bardot bangs”.   Then she uses a 1/2″ mini flat iron to train the bangs in the perfect direction.

Then  Roma uses a medium-sized Marcel curling iron to candlestick-curl her hair.  Using a hair clip, she then sections the hair horizontally around her head and then takes 1/2-inch sections and wraps them around the barrel of the iron, away from the face. When Roma is done she finishes Ashley’s look with hairspray to tame flyaways.

Sounds simple enough…HA!

Let us know if you try Roma’s trick for getting “the perfect blow out.”

Turn a Daytime “Do” Into a Nightime “Do”

13 Dec

Nothing turns heads quicker than a sexy hairdo for a fancy occasion. But with the busy schedules most Divas are working these days, going from daytime corporate wonder woman to nighttime red carpet Glam girl can be a bit challenging.  Here are a few easy ways to make your girl Friday “do” turn heads on the red carpet.

BASIC PONYTAIL: The basic ponytail is such a versatile do.  You can where it to the ball-field, the gym, the office and even on the red carpet.  Different variations will make it transition quite easily.

  • Try a mid ponytail with a side part sleeked back for a great corporate daytime look.  Transition to night by pulling out a section on the side with the most hair [from the ear forward].  Add a nice flip with a large barrel curling iron to add a sexy sweep.  Pair it with a beautiful drop earring and your “Do” made the quick change in less than 5 minutes.

BASIC CHIGNON: One of my favorite looks!  This can be a sleek daytime look but can become a sexy “messy do” in just a few quick minutes.

  • Start with a low chignon for daytime.  Avoid using too much product to sleek it back [this will make it easier to take out sections later].
  • For a quick change to night time, pull out small strands on both sides of your face.  Curl loosely and allow them to fall to the sides creating cascading curls around your face.  Don’t worry if the bun has become a little messy….you can even pull out small strands, curl with a large barrel curling iron, then twist and pin around the bun to create soft curls.

A SLEEK BUN OR FRENCH TWIST: A beautiful slicked back “do” in either a bun or french twist can be completely transformed by the addition of accessories.

  • A gorgeous Broach can become the highlight of your “Do” instantly.  Slide a bobby pin where you want the broach to be, then slide the pin of the broach through the bobby pin.  Adorn a French twist by choosing a long broach that can sit into the fold of the twist.  This is a great way to add a little “bling” to your “do”.  Add a pair of lovely long drop earrings and you’ve dressed up a daytime “do” that is sure to turn heads.

Whatever hairstyle you choose for your night-time gala work that Red Carpet like you own it!

Get Sofia Vergara’s Sexy Waves at the “New Year’s Eve” Premiere

12 Dec

Sofia Vergara at the premiere of the movie “New Year’s Eve” held at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California

How To Get The Look………Courtesy of Andi Scarbrough of Byu-Ti Salon/LA

On towel dried hair, apply a medium hold styling gel like Nourishing Nectar, from Pureology’s Colour Stylist collection, focus on root and mid-shafts. On the ends of your hair, apply a thermal protective serum (I love Pureology’s SuperSmooth Elixir).

-With a paddle brush, dry the front of your hair by brushing it all the way to one side, smooth against your head, and then to the other side, alternating back and forth until completely dry.  This will give you the smooth controled look on top, and spare the need of a flat iron on most hair textures.  You can add extra Elixir on the ends and at your hairline if you are fighting tough frizz, but it’s okay if the ends of your hair aren’t perfectly smooth, a little texture gives extra life to the curls.

-Use a 1″ or 1.5” iron.  Pull your hair half up, leaving hair from the temples down, and clip the rest up out of the way.  Holding the iron horizontally, take a section on one side from behind the ear forward and pinch the section between your fingers, then wrap it over and under the rod and hold it for a count for about seven seconds.  Don’t touch the curl after you drop it from the iron.  Take the remainder of your hair and break it unto four or five sections and move around the head doing this same curl.

-Take down the top section, part it down the middle, and slpit it into three sections, the two sides and a pie-shaped section at the back. Follow the same over-and-under curl technique on the iron, only start wrapping the hair about half way down the section to maintain sleekness on top.  Remember, don’t touch the curls.

Spray it generously with a working spray like Pureology’s incredible Strengthening Control hairspray.  Still, don’t touch the curls.  In about 10-20 minutes when the curls have cooled completely, rake through them with your fingers and shake them loose.  Blur any clumpy curls into soft waves by gently rubbing hem between your thumb and index fingers.  Polish the part and fringe area by eliminating any fly-aways with a dab of Elixir and seal the look with a final mist of hairspray.

Make Your Hair Color Last Longer

8 Nov

Share

In your 20′s and 30′s you colored your hair for the fun of it.  Choosing a new color meant a new fresh outlook and added a little “oomph” to your step.  As you head into your 40′s and 50′s the hair color takes on a whole new meaning- coloring those grays!  And YIKES it seems that the time between color jobs doesn’t seem to last nearly as long.

So if you have a job interview, or a last minute Red Carpet invitation, and forgot to schedule that appointment with your stylist for a fresh dose of color, keep in mind these helpful steps that just may extend the life of your color, and at very least, not give away your secrets quite so fast!

  • CHANGE UP YOUR PART: It’s the quickest way to camouflage those roots.  Or opt for a style that pulls your hair back, and use creative styling of your bangs to conceal your hairline.
  • MASCARA: Yep, you read it right.  If you have dark brown or black hair, believe it or not a friendly tube of mascara will do the trick for a quick fix.  This also works great for concealing those grays in brows, or a man’s sideburns.  I recommend waterproof mascara, just to give it more staying power.  And keep in mind this is a QUICK FIX!  I don’t recommend doing this daily, but in a pinch it will do the trick.

ROUX STICK’S are a GREAT handy little tool to keep on hand.  They are available in several basic colors and work as easy as coloring with crayons.  They also work great on brows- just wet a brow-brush then stroke it over the stick and apply to your brows.  Perfect for those days when your stylists schedule  doesn’t include you!

  • DON’T SHAMPOO DAILY:  Most Stylists are the first to tell you that over-shampooing your hair will affect the longevity of your color.  However, natural oils can dull your color and flatten your roots.  Try a good Dry Shampoo for alternating days.  They absorb natural scalp oils and give a lift to your roots.  My favorite by Oscar Blondi leaves a fresh lemon verbena scent so you feel like you just washed your hair.

  • ADD SOME VOLUME TO YOUR ROOTS:  Nothing like highlighting those roots faster than a flat ”Do”.    A little lift will naturally conceal those grays and take the focus off your grown out roots.   Try setting your hair on large Velcro rollers for 15-20 minutes to add volume to your style.

And ladies- when all else fails- WEAR A HAT!  The colder temps of Fall and Winter make hat wearing fashionable.  So grab a beautiful beret or beanie and work it into your wardrobe.  You’ll be fashionable and covering those roots- double duty is a win-win!

As always, with roots or not-

Exclusive Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes of Lifetime’s Project Accessory

26 Oct

Share

This just in- an exclusive sneak peek at Project Accessory.  Get your popcorn ready girls, as the biggest Competition Series since Project Runway debuted will premiere on Lifetime this week, and I have the INSIDE scoop from the Glam Sqaud themselves!

That’s right, Ms Buzz is tight with the Makeup Department, and I have the insider info on what, where and how they used their tools.   I just so happened to sit side by side the Key Makeup Artist, Rosanne Puchal almost [says it low under her breath so you can't hear me___ years ago] in Hollywood, CA in Joe Blasco’s Makeup Academy.  Proud to say we’ve been ‘besties’ ever since!  She’s the Thelma to my Louise, or the Lucy to my Ethel.

Donyale McRae is the Department head and Makeup Designer for the show.  Donyale is one of New York City’s most sought after makeup artists.  Having  worked his magic on the likes of Tina Turner, Anita Baker, Gladys Knight and many more.  His work can be seen on the Covers of every major magazine, both in the US and Europe.  He was the Department Head for 6 seasons of Project Runway, most recently Rocco’s Dinner Party and is the mastermind Makeup Designer behind the newest series to hit Lifetime, Project Accessory.

Donyale met Ro many years ago, and they have been teaming up ever since.  The Duo has been responsible for the look of many recent shows; Project Runway, Roccos’ Dinner Party, The Big Gay Sketch Show, Sherri, and now Project Accessory.

The makeup was sponsored by MAC, so of course most of the products they used were MAC, but every now and then I’m sure a few other favorites of theirs snuck in.  That’s just the way most of us Makeup Artists fly- we have favorite ”go to” products that we just HAVE to have in our kit.  Donyale says to be on the lookout for MAC’s new line of mascaras- ‘False Lashes’ Extreme Black. You’ll see them used throughout the season. The New Viva Glam lipsticks also make their debut, see if you can spot the new colors.

Donyale promises you will LOVE the look of the show.  Fabulous designers who are very talented and could make “something out of nothing.”  A “rather exciting” display of their talents.  He was quite proud of the work his Makeup and Hair departments did,  ”they provided a beautiful backdrop for the Accessories.”  Key Hairstylist James Crawford was just “fabulous”, working with products from John Frieda, the official Hair products Sponsor.  ”He is a very talented hairdresser to the stars, and he raised the bar on this one” , “a true delight to work with”, commented both Donyale and Rosanne.

Despite the ‘not so ideal’ working conditions; difficult location and minor mishaps with product delivery, as always, they pulled a MacGyver and made it all look effortless.  It must be something we all learn in makeup school, to roll with the tide because the best makeups seem to evolve when ’perfect’ settings aren’t the norm.

Every artist has their favorite products that I like to refer to as “security blankets”.  As an artist, you just feel better knowing they are in your kit.  I asked both Ro and Donyale what their ”security blanket” products were:

  • Donyale says “Concealer- GOOD concealer”.  “Don’t  waste your money on drugstore and dept. store concealers-buy a good theatrical  concealer that you can work into anything you need it to be.  If necessary you can water it down a bit to make it move, but a really good concealer is a must have for every girl!”
  • Ro says she loves “MAC blushes”, “they make beautiful colors and have staying power”, “a beautiful blush will add just the right amount of color to make your look pop!”

Look for their work to beautify the the runway of Project Accessory.  Debuting Thursday, October 27th 10:30 pm et/pt. on Lifetime.  Check your local listings.

Julianne Hough Looks Stunning at the Footloose Premiere in NYC

Julianne Hough at the NYC Premiere of her new film, Footloose, the remake of the 80′s hit.

Julianne Hough in Rachel Zoe

Former Dancing With The Stars pro dancer, Julianne Hough dazzled the red carpet this week in New York City at the premiere of the much anticipated remake of the 80′s classic, Footloose.
She made a statement in her Rachel Zoe mini- dress, and proved that a chic tuxedo isn’t just for men. She kept it simple and understated with a basic black clutch and matching pumps.
Julianne’s makeup was simple and classic with neutral colors.  Accents on her high cheekbones and gorgeous eyes.  Her hair was simple and straight.  Pro’s often get the look with a flat iron, but girls if you over-straighten your hair you’re killing it!  Get the look without killing your locks by allowing hair to dry naturally almost completely.  Then blow dry the “almost dry” hair with a large round brush to add volume to the roots and straighten out the ends.  Set your hair on large Velcro™ rollers [at least 2-3 inches in diameter] for at least 20-30 minutes.  The result will be gorgeous shiny smooth hair with volume- flat iron free!
Check out Footloose at a theater near you starting Friday, October 14th.

Kim Kardashian Stops by The Today Show

10 Oct

Share

Kim stopped by the NBC Studios of the The Today Show to show off her her lovely manicure, oh and it just happened to be dripping in diamonds $2.5 million worth of them to be exact.  WOWZA!

Too much?  Uh, for me, yes!  Knowing my luck, I would venture out the same day some “would be diamond thief” would be eager to make his next heist, and he might be willing to cut my hand off to get that ring.  Not to mention I would have to schedule extra appointments with my Chiropractor because surely the weight of that ring would set my shoulders off balance.

And of course as lovely as the ring was, you know the Makeup Artist in me was all about her “look”.  I love that Kim often turns to one of my favorite hairstyles for her day on TV – a sleek ponytail.  It used to be my “go to” style whenever my hair wasn’t the freshest I wanted…ok, ok so it was downright dirty, and my only hope was to slick it back.  But girls, a ponytail can take you from daytime to the Red Carpet in a matter of minutes.  Low, high, curled, straight, with or without bangs, add side wisps or leave a few curled tendrils cascading around your face.  No matter what your mood, a classic ponytail can always be the answer when you have no idea how to wear your hair.

Kirsten Dunst Rocks the Red Carpet in the UK

5 Oct

Share

Looking as lovely as ever, Kirsten Dunst arrived to the UK Premiere of her new movie Melancholia  looking ravishing.  With hair tossled back in a loose chignon, my absolute FAVORITE look on every girl, she turned heads with her grand entrance.

Kirsten Dunst in the UK

Kirsten’s makeup was flawless and natural.  Create her look by applying a smidge of concealer under your eyes to lighten and brighten.  Apply foundation with a Brush for a flawless finish.  Swirl a soft peachy pink on the apple of the cheeks working it back and up towards the hairline.  Dust the same blush over the eyelids, then finish with a soft taupe shadow smudged under the lashline for a soft look, and blended out to the outer corner of the eye.  Curl those lashes with a CURLY GIRL™ curler, and add a double dose of mascara to finish your look.  For extra umph, add a little Paula Dorf Enhancer Pencil™ to the inside rims of lower lash line and the inner corners of the eye to really make them pop!  Finish your look with a gorgeous Raspberry lipstick or opt for a luscious gloss instead.  Keep your look simple, understated and elegant.
