Cosmetics…Are They All the Same?

I am continuously amazed how many women are fooled by the Cosmetic giants.  Often you think you are paying more for a better brand, but are you really?  Is there a difference between a brand you’ll find at Target and one at Macy’s?  Maybe…but most likely not.

So how many Cosmetic companies do you think exist?  How many can you name?  5? 10? 25? 50?  You enter the department store and see almost 40 different brands, but do you really?  Actually, no.  You see 3.  That’s right, there are 3 major Cosmetic corporations who own almost every Cosmetic company in existence today.   So could your favorite face cream that retails for $95 really be the same as one at Target for $20?  Possibly, depending on who the parent company is.   Quite often the only difference in many of the brands is the essential oil and fragrances that gives a cream a signature scent or texture.   Pay attention to the first 5 ingredients, in many cases they are identical, meaning that your favorite Department store brand is the same as its sister in cheaper packaging.

What about a Natural line like Burt’s Bees?  I used to carry this line in my Beauty Boutique, and loved it.  All natural, and good for you, right?  Well, it was until the Clorox Company purchased it.  Did you know it was owned by the same people who manufacture the number #1 selling bleach?  When it first began, it was in 1 door in every zip code, now it can be found in every mass retailer across the country.  And what about MAC?  The line that makeup artists literally sent to the top of the charts so many years ago.  Owned now by Cosmetic giant Estee Lauder, and not quite the same line that it once was.

Ever walk into The Body Shop at your local mall?  Think you’re entering a place of natural products?  Maybe once upon a time, but now it’s owned by Cosmetic giant L’Oreal, who also owns Lancome, Maybelline, Garnier, and the biggest surprise,  Shu- Uemora and Kiehl’s, among 31 other brands.

And how about that Cosmetic giant Estee Lauder.  They own MAC, Smashbox, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Prescriptives, Origins, Aveda, La Mer, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors and Aramis to name a few.   Think you’re saving money by shopping for your Cosmetics at lower-end Department store Kohl’s who exclusively carries their own American Beauty, Flirt, Grassroots and Goodskin labs?  Well, think again, they are ALL owned by Estee Lauder.

Even Sephora, isn’t really Sephora once you dig a little deeper.  It’s owned by the 3rd Cosmetic giant, Paris-based Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH).  They also own Acqua di Parma, Benefit, MakeUp Forever, Dior, Fresh, Givenchy, Guerlain, Kenzo,
to name a few.  So does that explain why Sephora often rates Benefit and MakeUp Forever products as the BEST available?  Pretty much, the profits basically go into the same pot, so to speak.

Even Philosophy is no longer owned by its original owner, Christina Carlino, but was swallowed up by investment firm The Carlyle Group.  Since then, loyal customers of the line have complained that it is no longer what it was.

So what you think you’re getting might not always be exactly what you ARE getting.  Stay informed, read labels, and know what you’re paying for.  And when possible, buy made in the USA products from smaller companies, and you’ll know exactly what you’re getting!

Stay Gorgeous Girls…and informed!

xoxo
